Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall...

all you've got to do is......recall.

It was a trend; wear colors that enhance your skin tone.  I still have the book, because I still think they were right on target.  There are certain colors we wear that seemingly make us glow.  The science of the distinction is in the hues.  Colors are categorized into seasons; the trick is to determine your season.  Seasonal opposites can share colors, but their individual collections make the most of skin tone.    Curious yet??

Excerpts from 'Color Me Beautiful' by Carole Jackson

"There are more Winters...than any other seasonal type...."  Winters can have brown-black eyes, and a blue undertone to the skin, or gray-blue eyes with white flecks, milky skin.  Either will have blue-black highlights or sheen.  Ash brown hair color and a pink skin tone; olive skin with hair that darkens with age, and full silver gray with a deep rose-beige skin tone.  Winters shine in cool, clear colors.    Summer skins can have a rosy-pink skin tone, blue eyes and ash blonde hair, or fair and translucent skin with a blue undertone.  Freckles, medium brown hair and deep blue eyes with white flecks also indicate Summer.  "Most Summers have blonde, light brunette, or dark ash brown hair....Summer's eyes can also be green [or] hazel...The Summer is flattered by soft colors with a blue undertone."   Autumn includes fiery red highlights and dark golden brown eyes, or ivory skin with golden green eyes and golden brown hair. Peach skin with freckles, avacado green eyes and golden blonde hair also an Autumn.  "Most Autumns have brown, green, or hazel eyes, [occasionally] turquoise...[and] Autumn hair invariably has gold or red highlights, whether blonde, brunette, or ...redhead....Autumn is complimented by warm colors with golden undertones."   Springs can have golden blonde hair, blue or green eyes and a peachy skin tones. Vivid red hair, ivory skin and pale blue eyes; a delicate quality, and a Summer palette.  A peaches and cream complexion, auburn hair, and deep blue eyes with pale yellow flecks or Flaxen blondes, and golden cast blonde (that darkens with age) also defines a Spring.  "Springs can have blue, green, hazel or amber eyes, usually with golden tones....The Spring palette contains clear, warm colors, some delicate, some bright--all with yellow undertones."

You are beautiful!

Beauty cannot be described in simple terms.  What is beautiful to one is average to another, and so on.  We all possess beauty, but we don't always see it in the mirror.  That is because it's not about what you see on the outside, but what you can see OF the inside.  When someone is happy or excited, they have a twinkle in their eye-which tends to inspire, much like a smile.  Confidence can create that eye sparkle too.  You don't have to be a traditional beauty to intrigue the prince, just show him that you know your worth-and wonder about his.  You cannot buy real sex appeal, so accept no imitations!

Quotes on Women

I have an idea that the phrase "weaker sex" was coined by some woman to disarm some man she was preparing to overwhelm.  ~Ogden Nash A woman should soften but not weaken a man.  ~Sigmund Freud I would rather trust a woman's instinct than a man's reason.  ~Stanley Baldwin  Men look at themselves in mirrors.  Women look for themselves.  ~Elissa Melamed   A man is as good as he has to be, and a woman is as bad as she dares.  ~Elbert Hubbard  Fighting is essentially a masculine idea; a woman's weapon is her tongue.  ~Hermione Gingold  Woman begins by resisting a man's advances and ends by blocking his retreat.  ~Oscar Wilde

Hark Back to Hats (in Essay~esque Style)

There was a time when hats were the quintessential symbol of refinement.  I envy that time because I think hats are fun.  Some face shapes can wear almost any hat, but not me.  I found a few favorites recently in Galveston, but there are casual hats and not worthy of the word fashionable. (I bought one at Bubba's Army Surplus.)  They sit in my closet, gathering dust, for the most part.  But in the past...hmm, can you have a love affair with hats?  Have you reveled in the personal attention a hat provokes?  It takes nerve to wear a hat, to stand out, to call attention to yourself.  You have to live up to the history of this particular accessory.  Halloween was always the perfect excuse; as a Femme Fatale, I once pulled off a small, round, black 40's style hat with a long feather and face netting.  What a thrill to get away with playing that part!  One summer I wore a wonderful, floppy, wide brim straw hat to Scarborough Faire-the only place I had the nerve to wear such a large stunner.  I felt like a mysterious Southern Belle.  When I finally discarded this Scarlet -esque hat, it was with a wistful sigh.   My most treasured hat was a sophisticated, ultra-feminine style in wheat-color straw with palest pink, 2", gross-grain ribbon circling the crown and edging the molded brim, and ribbon flowers adorning the nape.  It was a vision of lovliness, and I felt I should have been invited to The Derby to truly do it justice.  I settled for Easter Brunch.  We only parted when the flattering lines of design began to disentegrate.  So long to my Gatsby-esque romance.  I lost my hat heart after that.

Soon, hats became more functional for me.  Winter is the perfect excuse to wear a hat....isn't it?   You risk hat hair, static, eyebrow rearrangement, and of course, the constant urge to look in the mirror.  Oh, but I go there-gladly.  Four years ago I bought a faux cashmere, pink mauve Liz Claiborne pull-on with a subtle bow decoration.  I get compliments every time I wear it, and at $7.00-I also bought a back-up!   Then two weeks ago, I stumbled on another Liz Claiborne hat I had to have.  It is winter white, nubby, slightly furry, and in a Jackie O style I find very French.  (Speaking of, my black beret is fetching too.)  Hats have appeal beyond function, but have fallen out of favor in everday fashion.  I admire a female that wears a fashionable hat to accentuate her outfit.  (Not to be confused with the woman who wears a hat to hide her bad hair day!)   Hats emulate Vintage style; a past with class.  Which brings to mind those  ladies wearing white gloves...
